Caring for Your Baby’s Skin – Simple Tips for Infant Skincare in Tropical Weather

A baby’s skin is his/her first defense against harmful substances such as germs, bacteria and irritants, making infant skincare one of the most important routines in baby care.

Whilst it functions as a protective barrier, a baby’s skin is also incredibly delicate – in fact, your baby’s skin is 30% thinner than yours! This means his/her skin is more prone to irritation and dehydration, which is why it requires protection, especially in sunny, humid Singapore where heat rash is a common affliction[1].

Now that you know the importance of protecting your baby’s skin, here are three simple but essential tips to keep his skin silky-smooth:

1. Dress Light

Babies under six months old should be kept out of the sun, as their sensitive skin can easily be damaged by strong UV rays under the hot afternoon sun.

After six months, babies can enjoy the sunlight now and then, but be sure to help him/her apply sunscreen (SPF 30 and above) at least 30 minutes before you leave the house.

In order to prevent heat rash, dress your baby in slightly loose, light-coloured clothing, preferably made from lightweight fabric such as cotton. A hat can also come in handy to shield him/her from the sun.

2. Use Gentle Products

Choose skincare products that are as gentle on your baby’s skin as your loving touch. Avoid harsh soaps and products that contain antiseptics such as alcohol, as they can dry and irritate his/her skin[2].

Instead, use mild cleansers and moisturisers that are specially developed for babies; with no added dyes, and little-to-no added fragrances.

Dodie’s Skincare Range uses a soap-free base to allow for gentle washing that does not irritate your baby’s skin or eyes. Our hypoallergenic products are dermatologically and ophthalmologically tested to ensure they are safe for newborns and babies with sensitive skin.

3. Choose Natural

Mother Nature knows best.

Where possible, use natural skincare products to minimise your baby’s exposure to chemicals, and thereby lowering the risk of allergies and chemical sensitivities[3].

With at least 92% of ingredients from organic sources, Dodie’s products do not contain added parabens, phenoxyethanol, MIT, phthalate and alcohol, ensuring that your baby receives the best Mother Nature has to offer.

Caring for Babies with Eczema

Atopic eczema is the most common skin condition for both babies and adults, with one in five children in Singapore suffering from the condition[4].

In addition to the skincare tips above, babies with eczema require extra care.

Babies with eczema should not be exposed to products containing perfume, which is a common irritant[5]. Use only bland, fragrance-free and soap-free products that can help to restore your baby’s protective skin barrier and moisturise his skin to prevent dryness.

When in doubt about whether a skincare product is suitable for your baby, we recommend consulting a paediatrician, especially for infants with special skin conditions.

Your baby’s skin is incredibly delicate and vulnerable to his environment, yet it’s essential to protect his skin against heat, humidity and harmful chemicals.

By dressing him appropriately for the weather and choosing only gentle and natural skincare products, you can protect your baby’s fragile skin, keeping it soft and smooth. Remember, healthy skin, healthy baby!
